Yard Sale Help Needed

Yard Sale 20223
Transfiguration Needs Your Help

Barbara Forder, one our newer members of our Parish Family, has kindly offered to coordinate our Yard Sale this year with the guidance of so many who have done this before. Can you help? This event has been so beneficial for our Parish in the past and we want to continue to make it successful.

Helpers required to unpack, sort and price items Thursday and Friday. We need help in carrying out tables and items that go outdoors. This is done at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. The sale begins at 8:00 a.m.
People needed to oversee and sell items both indoors and outside. People needed to repack all unsold items and reorganize Fireside room and replace chairs for church services on Sunday. People needed to load items into trucks or cars and deliver to Value Village after the sale.

Our success will come from many hands making the work lighter and way more fun! Add your name to the volunteer list on the bulletin board today.

A Message From Ray

Underground Railroad

Our tour of the Salem Chapel at the Geneva Street BME church was, to say the least, very enlightening for our group of 16. Rochelle Bush, the church historian, was exceptional in her delivery and of her cultural and diverse history!

We toured the chapel itself, and wandered about it’s historical plaques and pictures, went upstairs onto the balcony, where we saw the most gorgeous quilt depicting the history of the slave’s journey from Africa, to the the southern U.S. We then went downstairs and learned more about the history of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman (“Moses”), and her participation in leading many many slaves to freedom here in Canada, and St. Catharines in particular, one of the railroad’s “last stops.”

This was one of the most interesting tours I have participated in, and to have this gem right here in our city is a wonderful way to learn about our past! Thank you Rochelle, and please, keep up the good work! (Can’t wait to read your book!).

Coronation Evensong Planned

Coronation

Christ’s Church Cathedral will host an historic diocesan choral evensong service on Sunday, May 7 at 4pm to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen Consort. Bishop Susan Bell will be the preacher and Dean Tim Dobbin will preside. A reception will follow the service in Bishopsgate, weather-permitting.

We invite people from across the diocese to gather for this worship service and to pray for our new head of state, King Charles III. The service will be live-streamed on the diocesan YouTube channel for those unable to attend in person.

Road Show Snacks Needed – Concert May 6

Are you able to share a munchie for the upcoming benefit concert? All proceeds from this concert are kindly being donated to our church to help with our deficit. There is a sign-up sheet in the hall.

Please bring your money this Sunday to buy tickets, last chance before the show next Saturday. (Yes, tickets will be available at the door, but we would rather sell ahead of time to help us work out food and drink).

Mission to Seafarers – Looking for Volunteers!

Are you looking for a chance to meet and assist working people from around the world who visit Hamilton on a short-term basis? The Mission to Seafarers of Southern Ontario is looking for volunteers to serve at their Hamilton Station, most days and evenings during the week. Positions include:

Mission hosts: Staff the mission recreation centre on Burlington Street East, and offer a friendly welcome and hospitality to those who visit.

Drivers: Offer transportation to local points of interest in the Hamilton and Burlington areas from the piers at the Port of Hamilton in a Mission-owned van. Applicants must have a valid G license.

All applicants must complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Check at the Mission’s expense.

Or the Reverend Judith Alltree at glutenfreepriest@me.com or 647-295-3219.

Please note that volunteer time commitments are divided into four hour blocks. Our current opening times are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day, but we are looking to extend our hours beyond those times so that we would work to make other time periods available during the day to suit your availability.

Message from Barbara Sainty

Meals

As part of our MAP initiative, we wanted to find a way to work with Brock and to set up a community fridge or pantry. We have spoken with Brock’s Faith leaders and we are excited to work together to provide meals for students in need. If you have extra meals, please consider freezing them and sharing with Brock students. Meals should be labeled and indicate if they are vegetarian, vegan, gluten- free, lactose-free, or contain pork. Brock is looking for all kinds of food, they just want to know if they fit into any of the categories.

Once you have frozen them, let Barbara Sainty know [either by email (bsainty@brocku.ca) or phone (905.892.1758 – leave a message is fine)]. You can then put the meals in the church freezer and Barbara will pick them up and get them to Brock. Containers are available at church or you can use your own. Feel free to ask Barbara any questions you might have. We hope that this is an ongoing ministry. Students (especially international students) are at Brock year-round and can always appreciate any food!

Lenten Lunch – Thank You And Success

Soup

It was so wonderful to be able to bring back the Lenten Lunches this year! We use to hold Lenten Lunches every Wednesday in Lent. It was quite the production, and many hands were required each week to ensure things ran smoothly. It was very rare that I could go on a Wednesday to participate, but they were always well attended, well…unless there was a snow storm, and I think there were a few!

This year we chose to do the lunches a bit differently and held them on the first and last Sundays of Lent after the 10:30 service.

I cannot even begin to list all the people involved in making this year’s lunches such a success. To those that made soups and desserts, thank you for sharing your amazing culinary talents with us! (Thank you, Peggy, for my take home bag of treats! I’m being good! Only one a day!!) To those that set up, put away, dished out soups, jumped in wherever needed, washed dishes, and washed more dishes, thank you! We could not have done it without all of you! Y’all are hired for the next lunch!

I am sure you noticed I said the lunches were a success. Success does not even begin to describe how generous you have been. We raised a total of $2,017.75 for PWRDF! These funds are greatly needed right now as PWRDF responds to so many current world events. So, from the bottom of my heart, as the PWRDF representative at Transfiguration, thank you! Thank you so much for your generosity and support.

Watch out for future events and information about PWRDF this year.

Again, thank you! Kelly Twerdy

Maundy Thursday

On Maundy Thursday we read in John’s Gospel about Jesus showing what it means to be a servant to all as he kneels before each of his disciples and washes their feet. As a reminder of this lesson and knowing the number of people in need in our community we are asking for a donation of socks, men’s or women’s. These will then be given out to the homeless and those in need.
